Start with the study population
A result in rodents is not a result in people. Check whether the study enrolled humans, how many, and for how long, before you weigh the finding at all.
Separate design from headline
Randomized controlled trials, open-label series, case reports, and preclinical work sit at very different levels of confidence, even when the abstract sounds identical.
Check the registry entry
For clinical trials, the registry record shows phase, status, and whether results were ever posted. A registered trial is not the same as a completed or reported one.
Look for replication
One positive study is a hypothesis. Independent groups reproducing a result is what turns it into evidence.
